About M374

(pronounced Meta)

M374 is an independent neuroscience research lab. We develop methods for training cognition — interrupting recurrent thought, cultivating self-observation, sustaining attention — and we study the bodily systems those methods depend on.

Our work rests on three premises. That the mind is trainable. That cognitive function depends on a body that sleeps, digests, moves, and regulates itself. And that methods built for real people in real lives should honor both the evidence and its limits — not overclaim, not gatekeep, not reduce the sacred to the measurable.

M374 operates three research programs: Metanoia (interrupting recurrent thought patterns), Metacognition (the self-observing mind), and Meditation (sustained contemplative practice). Each program has its own method in development and its own research brief grounded in peer-reviewed neuroscience. The Meta Guide — a short educational resource on M374's work and the bodily foundations that support it — is freely available.

Intellectual lineage

M374 situates its work in a specific tradition. William James — whose 1902 Varieties of Religious Experience inaugurated the empirical study of transformations of mind — is our intellectual ancestor. We share his commitment to studying consciousness and cognition scientifically without reducing them, and to taking seriously both the phenomena and the methodology.

Operating structure

M374 is the research arm of Meta Lab LLC, a California company. The lab was founded by Nilo, an independent researcher trained in neuroscience at Harvard and nutrition science at Stanford, currently living between California and France.
